Number of Nouns

 Noun का Number इसके संख्या एक या एक से अधिक होने के बारे में सूचित करता है।

>अँग्रेजी व्याकरण में Noun के निम्नलिखित दो Number होते हैं:-

1. Singular Number

2.Plural Number

1. Singular Number ( एकवचन ) : जिस शब्द से सिर्फ एक संज्ञा का बोध हो, Singular Number कहलाता है । 

Examples: Boy, Cat, Dog. Elephant, Fox etc.

2. Plural Number (बहुवचन) : जिस शब्द से एक से अधिक संज्ञा का बोध हो, Plural Number कहलाता है।

Examples:  Books, Pens, Years etc.

Singular से Plural में बदलने का नियम

1.  Singular Noun के अंत में 's ' जोड़कर आमतौर पर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

2.यदि Singular Noun के अंत में ‘s’, ‘ss ’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ (च) ‘x’ या 'z' हो, तो इसके अंत में 'es' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

 Exception : ox - oxen.

Note : यदि ‘ch’ का उच्चारण 'क' हो, तो उसके अंत में ‘s' लगाकर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

3. यदि Noun के अंत में 'y' हो एवं ‘y' के पहले कोई Vowel हो, तो 's' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

4. यदि Noun के अंत में ‘y ' हो एवं ‘y' के पहले Consonant हो, तो ‘y' को हटाकर ‘ies' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है; 

जैसे—

Lady                                         ladies                                    

Study                                        studies

5. यदि Noun के अंत में '0' हो एवं '0' के पहले कोई Consonant हो, तो इसमें "es" जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है,

 जैसे—

Motto                                            mottoes

Mosquito                                      mosquitoes                       

Buffalo                                          buffaloes

6. यदि Noun के अंत में 'o' हो एवं 'o' के पहले कोई Vowel हो, तो उसमें 's' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

ZOO                                                     zoos

7. (a) यदि Noun के अंत में 'f' या 'fe' रहे, तो उसे हटाकर 'ves' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

Wife                                                       wives                                  

Life                                                        lives                      

Knife                                                     knives                              

Wolf                                                      wolves

(b)यदि Noun के अंत में 'f' लगा रहे और उससे पहले Double Vowels हो, तो ‘s’ लगाकर Plural बनाया जाता है; 

जैसे—

Chief                                                    chiefs

Exception: leaf - leaves, thief - thieves.

(c) निम्नलिखित ‘f’, ‘ff’, या ‘fe' से अंत होनेवाले Nouns का Plural 's' जोड़कर बनाया जाता है;

जैसे

8. बहुत से Singular Nouns के बीच के Vowel में परिवर्तन कर Plural बनाया जाता  है :

जैसे—

Singular                                               Plural

Woman                                                women               

Tooth                                                   teeth                                     

Foot                                                     feet

Note: Brother Plural : (1) brothers (ii) brotheren.

9. कुछ Nouns के अंत में ‘is' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु " को ‘e' में बदल दिया जाता है;

जैसे—

10. कुछ Nouns के अंत में 'ex' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु 'ex' को ‘ices' में बदल दिया जाता है; 

जैसे—

11. कुछ Nouns के अंत म ‘ix ' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतू ‘ix' को ‘ices' में बदल दिया जाता है;

Radix                                                     radices

12. कुछ Nouns के अंत में ‘um' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतू 'um' को 'a' में बदल दिया जाता है; 

जैसे—

13. कुछ Nouns के अंत में ‘us' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु 'us' को ‘i' में बदल दिया जाता है;

Exception: corpus-corpera, genus- genera, opus- opera

14. कुछ Nouns के अंत में 'on' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु 'on' को 'a' में बदल दिया जाता है; 

जैसे—

15. कुछ Nouns के अंत में 'a' लगा रहता है। ऐसे Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु अंत में 'e' जोड़ा जाता है;

जैसे—

16. Compound Nouns में इसके मुख्य शब्द में 's' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

Maid-servant                                     maid-servants

17. कुछ ऐसे Compound Nouns हैं जिनके tail term में 's' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है; 

जैसे—

Singular                                               Plural

Spoonful                                              spoonfuls                            

Glassful                                                glassfuls

18. कुछ ऐसे Compound Nouns हैं जिनके अंत में 's' जोड़कर Plural बनाया जाता है;

जैसे—

Good-for-nothing                            good-for-nothings          

Look-out                                          look-outs

19. 'man' से अंत होनेवाले Compound Nouns को Plural बनाने हेतु 'man' को 'men' में बदल दिया जाता है;

जैसे--
